Dragon Boat Festival Holiday Notice
The fragrance of mugwort fills the air, the drumbeats of dragon boat races echo across the water, and the enchanting Dragon Boat Festival is just around the corner. Celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, the Dragon Boat Festival, also known as the Fifth Lunar Month, is a traditional Chinese festival that is a vibrant canvas interwoven with centuries of history, folklore, and cultural significance. This year’s festival will be celebrated from May 31 to June 1.
At the heart of the Dragon Boat Festival is the moving story of Qu Yuan, a famous poet and statesman from the State of Chu. With unwavering patriotism, Qu Yuan threw himself into the Miluo River after his homeland fell, leaving behind a lasting legend. To save him, villagers rowed desperately, beat drums to drive away schools of fish, and threw zongzi (a pyramid-shaped rice dumpling wrapped in bamboo leaves) into the water to stop river creatures from devouring his body. These acts of bravery and compassion gave rise to the iconic dragon boat races and the beloved tradition of eating zongzi, which remain powerful symbols of unity, resilience, and remembrance. Dragon boat racing is a thrilling spectacle, a display of strength and teamwork, and a highlight of the festival. Teams of oarsmen paddle their beautifully decorated boats through the water with incredible speed and precision, to the accompaniment of drum beats. The majestic vessels, adorned with colorful scales and fierce dragon heads, are a breathtaking sight, showcasing the craftsmanship and cultural pride of the Chinese nation. Each stroke represents the nation’s concerted effort to overcome challenges and strive for victory, reflecting the Chinese people’s spirit of perseverance and never giving up.
Zongzi, the iconic delicacy of the Dragon Boat Festival, comes in a variety of flavors and fillings. From savory pork with salted egg yolk to sweet red bean and red dates, these glutinous rice dumplings are a delicacy that reflects the diverse tastes and traditions of China. The meticulous process of wrapping the dumplings in bamboo leaves, tying them with string, and steaming them to perfection is a skill passed down from generation to generation, and also inherits the rich culinary traditions of the festival.
In addition to dragon boat racing and making rice dumplings, there are many other traditional customs during the Dragon Boat Festival. Hanging moxa and calamus on doors and windows is believed to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck, while wearing sachets filled with herbs and spices is believed to prevent disease and promote health. Children often participate in these customs to enjoy the festive atmosphere and learn about the cultural significance of the festival from their elders.
